Exploring the surroundings
There are many enjoyable trips to choose from around the hotel, in the pristine mountains and beautiful countryside of the Matarraña region.
Agriculture in this arid region is mostly dedicated to indigenous fruit trees, foremost among which are olives (variety: Empeltre), almonds, but also peaches and apricots. The hotel is surrounded by villages, which retain much of their Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque heritage.
The closest villages are:
- Valderrobres: Declared of “cultural interest” by the government of Aragon, the architecture of its historic center has also earned it membership among “The most beautiful Spanish villages”. You reach the historic center crossing a Gothic bridge over the regions eponymous Matarraña river. The castle and church of Sta. Maria la Mayor are the emblematic buildings rising above the village.
- La Fresneda: This beautiful village, 10 km from Valderrobres, keeps touches of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Its Plaza Mayor with the 16th century city hall (casa consistorial), the arched street leading up to it are considered among the most beautiful in Spain. Don’t miss the Palacio de la Encomienda, a former commandry of the monastic military order of the Knights of Calatrava.
- Calaceite: The origin of this village’s name is Arabic: Calat Zeit, the castle of Zeit. It is adorned with Baroque buildings. On market day (Wednesday), the village is full of colorful stands and fragrances. The village is considered of “cultural interest”. Close by, one may visit the archaeological ruins of the Iberian oppidum of San Antonio.
Other villages of interest are Beceite, Cretas, Horta de Sant Joan, Monroyo, and Morella.
